                                                                                                          Fire Policy and procedures

All staff, visitors and volunteers at Hempsted Playgroup and Toddlers will be aware of the following: -

Hempsted Church of England Primary School and Hempsted Playgroup are on the same site and the Fire Alarms are arranged to notify each other in case of a fire.

A member of staff will be nominated each day to collect the register in the event of a fire.

The register with emergency contacts is kept in a consistent place in the Playgroup wall.

A member of staff will be nominated each day to check all areas of the building for any remaining children or adults (at the end of the evacuation).

A member of staff will be nominated each day to check that all confidential records are secured in the event of an evacuation of the building.

In the event of a fire / evacuation a member of staff will ensure that any child with a hearing impediment is aware of what is going on and of the procedure that will follow.

In the event of a fire all staff will remain calm and will encourage the children to remain calm and keep together.

Everyone in the building will leave the building as per the usual fire drill, and assemble at the nominated assembly point.  The dragon path on the school playground is our allocated point.

On assembly at the assembly point the register will be checked to ensure that everyone is present.

A comprehensive fire safety risk assessment is carried out termly by the play leader.

Emergency Evacuation procedure

A Playgroup informal emergency evacuation Drill will take place every term for each of the weekly Playgroup sessions.  Hempsted Primary School also arrange a formal fire drill with us which we take part in.

A record of this will be made in the Emergency Evacuation Drill book stating any difficulties.

Emergency Evacuation procedures are displayed on our notice board.

The procedures are as follows: -

The Play leader will blow a whistle or fire alarm will sound and everyone will quickly and calmly move immediately to the appropriate exit doors.

In the setting there are two possible exits that may be used in the practice; which one, is decided at the start of the practice.

On exiting the building everyone will assemble on the dragon path on the school playground.

The Designated Fire Marshall will meanwhile check the toilets, kitchen and cupboards for anyone still present.

The Play Leader will take the register and account for everyone.

Duty parents must leave the building taking any visiting children with them on immediately hearing the whistle.

In the event of a real fire the Deputy Leader will go to the nearest telephone and call the emergency services.
